I am a founder of a pretty busy animal rescue here in WI...well, busy considering it's run by all volunteers. In our adoption contract, it states that animals are to be returned to us for any reason ---
Having said that, the whole point is to make sure the animal is safe and in a good home... We would have had Ellen's hairdresser fill out an adoption application, checked their references... and probably left the animal where it was.
I think the rescue went beyond the limits, calling in the police, etc. It could have been handled in a much, much better way with a very happy ending.
BTW: My husband heard that this is the 3rd dog that Ellen has adopted that did NOT get along with her cats... (It's not the dogs, it's the cats! Believe me, I have one of those cats...)
