Six Months Old!
Charlotte is six month's old today!
She's started eating cereal and tries her first fruit this weekend. She's a happy baby who likes to laugh and loves to roll all around! We were having some trouble with going to bed but at the moment, things are much better. It's 7:48, and both girls are in bed!

My Morning with Maya Angelou
This morning was a gift.
I could barely speak while in the presence of Maya Angelou. I still can't believe I was in the same room with this remarkable human. I had tears in my eyes about ten minutes into her talk, and they stayed there pretty much all day. Emotion wears one out, but I'm all good now. In the audiobook of "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings," Maya reads with the passion of a minister and the articulation of Captain Kirk.
She did the same today. I had forgotten about the way she speaks and it brought back a very powerful memory. The first time I read Caged Bird, I was in college in Wilmington, NC, in my 2nd year. My grandfather passed away that fall and I left school to go home and attend his funeral. I remember being extremely upset, but knowing that I had to drive 4 hours home, I had to keep it together.
Maya Angelou, in the audio version of the book, had a particular slow and melodic way of saying "Deuteronomy" in the section of the book where she discusses the potential wisdom behind memorizing the book of Deuteronomy in the Bible and following its teachings verbatim.
I can still hear her saying it: Deu-Ta-Ro...Nomee.
That was my safe word for the four hours that it took me to drive home, the day after my grandfather died. I repeated it over and over and over and over and over, past each mile marker, past each highway exit, past each town I traveled through.
During the visitation and the funeral, I said the word, in her voice, to keep myself from crying.
The moment she started speaking this morning, her voice triggered Deu-Ta-Ro...Nomee. Which triggered the funeral, which triggered the memories of my grandparents, which sent the tears down my face.
This woman is a powerhouse. I'm in awe of the way she can build me up and tear me down with a single word.
Her message this morning was about being a rainbow for others. I will post a transcript, and hopefully the video when ASCD posts the archive. It is a must see. Her story today was beyond inspiring, it was truth and honesty and brutality and kindness and real. What a living legend. I was so humbled by her words. Her word.
This morning really was a gift. A gift of memories.

Lily Fisher: Comet Hunter
We finally had a night here in Buffalo that was clear, but unfortunately the comet we were looking for was no where to be found. The wind really picked up and we were having trouble keeping the telescope still enough to see anything. We managed an okay picture of the moon and saw Jupiter and her four main moons. That counts as a pretty good night, right? Lily and I talked about science and what scientists who study the moon and planets and stars are called: Astronomers. She talked about perhaps being an astronomer when she grew up. When we pulled up in the driveway, I asked her again what she wanted to be when she grew up, trying to get her to own the new word.
She said, "What are the scientists called that study animals?"
I said, "Zoologists."
She said, "Yeah, that's what I want to be. A Zoologist."
Oy.

Lily's 6th Birthday!
Lily is 6 YEARS OLD! It's hard to believe that it's been six years. We are so proud of her. She's a really good girl and she is a friend to everybody. Even though these last two years have been a little different than we had planned, all is good at the moment. We didn't post an update recently, but I don't think we needed to. She's vibrant. She's awesome. She's healthy. And she's cool. We love her to pieces and we're so happy she's ours! Happy Birthday Lily! We love you so much!

Gifts from Cyber-Grandma Katie!
Lily got an early birthday present and even Groundhog Day presents from her Cyber-Grandma Katie in Wisconsin. Katie sends something Groundhog related every year, and this year, it was a Chocolate Groundhog. Katie and Lily also share a love of Sock Monkeys and Katie sent some of those too! Lily especially enjoyed her gingerbread 6! (We could only get a picture of a piece of it--it was SOOOO good!) Thank you so much Grandma Katie--that was REALLY sweet. (Literally!)

Charlotte and Lily Update!
Charlotte is 4 months old today! In the picture, she's got her favorite things: a taggy blanket from her cyber-Grandma Katie in Wisconsin (who I'll get to see in Chicago in March!) and her light up singing dog from the Ragusa's. She's crying a little when it's bedtime, but otherwise is a very happy baby who sleeps 11-12 hours a night! (THANK GOD!) She laughs and giggles a lot and just started rolling over. She has a new high chair and will be trying cereal very soon!
Lily is almost 6 years old and came home yesterday with an award for being KIND at school! She got to come up on stage in front of the whole school and received her award from the principal. Her teacher and everyone at the school tell us how nice she is to others. We like that she's good out in public! We're planning her birthday party soon at Adventure Landing again this year. It's a little smaller party this year with just a few of her girlfriends. We also have a surprise for Lily that we can't reveal yet, but she's going to flip out when she gets it!
Stay tuned...

Getting Charlotte to smile...
I don't know if it's me singing Tori Amos's "Cars and Guitars" or talking like Madea, but the kid is smiling!
